In 1997, Philippine vocal group the Company released The Company Greatest Hits. The album's release was probably prompted by the group leaving Ivory Records -- its home for the past five albums (including a Christmas album) -- the previous year, and signing with BMG Records Philippines. This compilation culls songs from four of the group's five albums (excluding the Christmas album). Most of the Company's albums contain a mix of adventurous, often jazz-inflected material and the easy-listening/middle-of-the-road music styles that have been quite popular in the Philippines. The adventurous material also purveys such styles as dance, gospel, funk, and rock. Unfortunately, most of The Company Greatest Hits concentrates on the easy-listening material. A notable exception is the adventurous, gospel-inflected 'Harmony,' which, surprisingly enough, opens this compilation. 'Harmony' is the title track to the Company's 1994 album. Another exception is the spirited, dance-inflected 'Back Together,' taken from the Company's second album Six by 6. Otherwise, songs such as 'Sana Nga (Ikaw Na)' (trans: I Hope [It's You]), 'Now that I Have You,' 'For the Long Run,' and 'Muntik Na Kitang Minahal' (trans: I'm Almost Falling in Love with You) represent some of the Company's most tepid material. It's sad, but not surprising that this greatest hits compilation includes mostly soft and unchallenging music. To the Company's everlasting credit, however, the band recorded a number of songs that pushed musical borders during their stay at Ivory Records.
